93 prelude jumping rpm in 5th gear
i have a 93 honda prelude vtec w/ 160k miles 5 spd. when i drive on the freeway in 5th gear at 60 mph, rpm hits around 4000rpm and it jumps up and down between 3500-4000rpm. it did that for like a month and a half now. yesterday the rpm jumped all the way down to 0 rpm and all the way to redline like crazy. my engine seems like it was choking, puffing, struggling. I was about to pull lover, but then it got back to normal. it did that a couple times. well this isnt the first time i experienced the jumping rpm. usually when i race, which i don't do anymore, right after the rpm hits 5500, the rpm jumps to 6000 and 7400rpm. that **** me off because i don't know when to shift and where redline is. well now everytime i drive on the freeway i get scared that my car might die. i would appreciate if you guys can help me. thx
If the tach is bouncing you need an igniter. The igniter sends an RPM signal to the cluster. It will sometimes cause the car to hesitate as well. Do youself a favor and get an OEM Honda igniter from the dealer. Anything aftermkt will leave you on the side of the road in a few days/weeks. hth

I don't know about it being the clutch either. I mean it could be, but technically he should be feeling it in all the gears not just in 5th. Naturally there is more power dumped on the clutch in the lower gears so it should be slipping then. That's the way mine was, I had to get to my high gears fast. Also a slipping clutch shouldn't be causing engine hesistation.
If the tach is really erratic, it's most likely your igniter. If it's the clutch, the physical rpm of the engine should go up when you accelerate, you'd feel it all gears more so in the lower ones.
Also as for your grinding 5th gear if your short on cash go get some Penzoil Syncromesh tranny fluid, 2qt's and see if that fixes it. I've heard tons of wonder stories of that MTF fixing grinds. Otherwise as stated it's either your forks or a synchro.

How can the clutch be the problem if this is occurring?
Sounds like either the coil/igniter. Also, check the plugs, dist. cap, and dist. rotor.

yay the police recovered the car the next day. wow the theives must be nicest thieves ever. my car is perfectly fine. no signs of theft. they only took a cheap $20 toolset from walmart, change (coins) in the ashtray, portable mp3 256mb player, and took the pedal lock. i don't know how they did it so quick and professionally. the ignition is not broken still has steering column plastic cover on it. i had my pedal loc on my clutch how did they do this? i had no alarm tho. i didnt expect to have my car in one piece and still have h22 motor.
