Starter won't stop spinning without keys in ignition.
This is not in a Honda, it's in a 2000 Toyota 4Runner. There used to be a clicking sound when I tried to start the car before, but it would always eventually start. Today, I started the car and the starter wouldn't stop cranking even with keys out of ignition. What can it be? Do I need to replace ignition cylinder? Starter solenoid (no)?
Thanks in advance.

that sounds like something in the ignition...would go that way first
check for 12VDC at the starter. The big fat wire is going to have voltage. The smaller wire comes from the ignition switch. Unplug the little wire check for voltage. Should only have voltage while starting the engine.
Or... the starter bendix (the part that the solenoid pushes out to engage the flywheel) is gummed up and not returning to the rest position. Or possibly the solenoid itself is sticking.

I changed ignition switch and that wasn't it. Next I'll pull the starter out (looks like it's going to be bitch) and check the solenoid. Thank you all for suggestions.
Your starter contacts are worn and sticking inside the solenoid.
Repalce your contacts! A 15 minute repair once your starter is out.

This is why I check things first before i assume its anything. How much did that switch cost you?

I actually had a whole steering column out of a 1998, so that was free. I did buy a starter relay and it was about $50. Relay wasn't the problem though and they didn't let me return it.

Contacts it is. I hit the starter with a bar and it solved the problem (probably temporarilly
). I should have done that from the start. I'll replace them in the next few days. Sorry for bumping my own old thread, just wanted it to have "closure".

Thanks for letting us know what happened.
There is nothing worse than a thread like this with no outcome or closeure.
Enjoy your rebuilt starter

I am a toyota tech, & I wish I would have seen this thread earlier. We have a lot of problems with worn contacts in our starters, but the nice thing is you can service most of them. That saves you lots of money especially if you can do the work yourself.
