1994 Honda Civic EX Problem
Hi,
I have a couple of problems with my 94 Civic EX Coupe Manual Transmission cluster. The speedometer, odometer and tripometer work only sometimes. The hand on the speedometer sometimes twitches, stay at a certain mph, tries to go all the way around but the stopper stops it. This happens at random whether it's cold, warm, driving at low speeds or high speeds.
The tripometer and speedometer seems to be in sync -- when the tripometer works, the odometer works as well. All other gauges work fine. The car has about 220K miles on it. The VSS was swapped when the tranny was swapped a few months back. I am thinking since the VSS was changed and problem is still there, that the issue is coming from the cluster itself.
Any input or advice is appreciated.
Thanks,
Jim

Remote, but possible, this happened when my friend's car was struck by lightning. It was a LeBaron 'vert and it was white. It was nicknamed "White Lightning." This was back in high school a number of years back, mind you.

Dang if it wasn't for this bit-o-info, all signs point to bad VSS.
A new one from Advance Auto/AutoZone will run around $80-$90 from what I can recall, but you should be able to return it if it didn't remedy your problem.
FWIW, when my VSS started going south likewise at around 220K, it exhibited the exact same symptoms...even twitching while at a complete stop. Wacky!
