Default An Unusual Custom CAI

Hey everyone, I need your help with this one. I was on CarDomain and a person told me how he made a custom cold air intake out of his existing stuff and some zip ties. I was wondering, if it's okay to run the car like this or not. What he said was to take apart the existing air box, like you were going to change the air filter. Then remove the bottom of the airbox completely from the car. Now all you'll have left is the top of the airbox which hooks into the rubber tubing that hooks into the engine and of course the air filter. Now take the air filter and zip tie it to the top of the air box running the zip ties through the 4 screw holes of the top of the air box and the 4 holes of the air filter. Now what you have is a huge open space underneath your new CAI and your battery. Basically all you did was eliminate the bottom of your airbox that was restricting air flow, and ziptied your air filter to the top of your air box (that runs to the engine). Your air filter is exposed to the open air and eliminates the rest of the plastic crap that restricts air flow. AND IT SOUNDS COOL! I tried to be as descriptive as possible so that you guys could tell what I did. What do you all think? Do you think that I could run the car like this permanetly? Or would it cause damage? I wouldn't want to do anything that would whatsoever damage the engine. Thanks for the help.

the plastic stuff that you remove from the bottom actually directs fresh air from behind the bumper up to your filter. i dont know what gains, if any, you will get but it sure as hell would be alot louder now

Actually, it doesn't work as you think. With the resonator installed, hot air is pulled from the engine bay thru the resonator (behind the bumper) and into the engine. If you remove the bottom of the air box, you're exposing the filter to the hot air from the engine bay, which does no good. The way to do this is to remove the resonator from behind the bumper, and leave the bottom of the air box intact. That plastic piece (bottom of the air box) is what shields the filter from hot air, and directs cool air from behind the bumper into the engine.

With the air filter zip tied to the air box cover? I'd say no. Do the zip ties ensure that you get an airtight seal between the filter and the cover?

Why bother to hack a bunch of sh-t when you can get a ebay CAI that will do the samething if not better for 35 dollar?

and when you sell the car you don't have to get hard pressed for the hack job on the airbox, etc.

it doesn't matter what intake, you'll be lucky to see 3-4whp gain, in a 3100 lbs car you can't feel a damn thing.

the hackjob intake will not do much harm but the bigger question is why.

Hey thanks everyone for the help! I got to thinking about it some more, and I thought maybe I could take the piece out from behind the bumbper and make some sort of PVC scoop underneath the car so it would shoot the cold air up to my CAI.

In response to iam7head: I've looked at eBay filters, but most of them are short rams right? Which may work for my car considering the battery is in between the engine and the intake. I really want a cold air though.

One final question. Will using the filter like this harm performance at all? What I mean is instead of gain I will expireince loss?

fram makes alot of filter, the newer paper core one is know for cracking after a while(but again, you suppose to change it at 12k service).

while my older style of fram still holding up

not sure will it hurt perfomance, i dont have any flow bence to test them

Hey I appreciate the help. What about the eBay intakes? Aren't most of those going to be short ram?

ebay intake PIPE + a qaulity filter (ex: K&N, Apexi, HKS, Blitz, AEM,Injen, ETC.) is almost just as good as a brand name intake. i cant say for sure because i have yet to see dyno results but in my opinion the money saved is not worth the extra few ponies gained from a name brand intake

That's what I kinda figured I would end up doing after a while.
