can you take a look at these to help me figure out if my timing if in fact off. this is the last thing i can think of to get this running. here are some symtoms....It idles rough and backfires like crazy. compression is good and i changed wires and plugs. but here are the pics

need better pics and the cams gears arent the only think that need to be lined up, check to make sure the crank is at tdc. the belt has slack in it to.... also whens the last time you changed you cap and rotor?
can't tell anything from those pics. Get a small ruler and use that to line up the 4 lines on the cam gears and as project said, make sure the crank is also lined up at tdc.

Exactly
. Those 2 lines might be touching, but the other 2 on the other side of the gears need to be in line also.

I believe it looks off because there's alot of slack at that part, try using a 14mm and moving the exhaust cam gear towards the radiator and intake cam gear towards the firewall to take away the slack and retake the pictures.

Do that to line the cams up TDC, or to even see if they Will,
If they won't, then they're definitely off.
The whole is in the cam cap, and will be on the camshaft while at TDC.

As I've already stated, you go by the 4 ticks on the cams, not the arrows. The arrows are just an estimate and when everything is at TDC they're actually not 90 degrees staight up.
I like to extend a piece of string across the gears to make sure that the marks are aligned. From the pictures, it looks like your gears are off.
