Upper timing belt cover?
You do have to remove the valve cover to get that cover off. If your checking to see if the belt broke just shine a light down into the oil cap have someone turn the engine over and see if the valves move. If they dont move its broken. I would do that before you take off the valve cover and have to replace the gasket for nothing.
I have the same exact engine. You don't actually have to remove the valve cover, just lift it up a little. Also, if the gasket is in fairly good shape, it is reusable. This would be a good chance to take the valve cover off and inspect or replace the gasket. I've cleaned old ones up as well as the valve cover with success.
