Upper timing cover removal w/o pulling valve cover ?
I think I have a cam seal leak I want to check - D16Y8. Someone in another thread commented that you can PRY the top timing cover out without removing the valve cover. It makes sense but my luck in these kinds of short cuts usually leaves me with cracks or breaks in covers.
Just wondering if others have successfully pulled an upper Y8 timing cover this way ?
Thx

you have to loosen the bolts to get it to clear otherwise you will have to bend the valve cover if it is even possible without breaking it . it will be safer jus to remove the valve cover though IMO

the gasket is only like a couple bucks. and if yours is in good shape i don't think you would need to replace it.

You can only do it if you think ahead and shave the lip off the upper timing cover. Then you can pull the cover without any fuss. I know that doesn't really help now, but something to think about when you do take it off. Check D-series.org for a how to.
I did it and it works great.

Re: Upper timing cover removal w/o pulling valve cover ? (ABK)
I say that because I'm certain the valve cover is not leaking. Suspect it's a slow cam seal leak.
I know the valve cover is easy to take off but I was just looking for a short cut to check for leaks. I read someone to say the upper timing cover will pry out without pulling the valve cover. Obviously from the responses this is not a popular shortcut.
