Default a couple of questions before welding motor mounts

i'm getting ready to have the passenger side mount welded into my crx for a k swap, and i have a couple of questions that i've been getting conflicting information on. i thought i'd ask here since welding is what most of you do.

here is a pic to give some reference: taken from john's (composimo) thread in the ef forum- let me know if you want them taken down.

the first is a mig vs. tig question. i can get it mig'd for free by a pretty good welder at my house, which is good since transporting the shell is a pain. or i can take it somewhere and pay to get it tig'd. what's the best way to go here?

the second is a method question. hasport says to just rosette weld the holes. some people (like john above) also go all the way around. any harm in doing either?

and finally i'm curious about future rust. i know that there are a few different weld-through primers out there. would something like that be usefull, or should i just do it like the above pics and not worry about it.

thanks in advance-
greg

GMAW for sure. It'd take WAY to long to GTAW that whole thing, and with as much weld as it has, a GMAW will be perfectly fine.

I myself would tig it, it would not take that long. Yes they can mig it and it could be just as strong, but the welder has to know what he is doing.

No harm, as long as you let the metal cool down and you watch for warpage, I don't see a problem at all. As for rust, paint it afterwards.

i would tig it at my house, or mig it if i wanted it done quickly. either is fine. but since you can get it migd for free and at home then go that route.

just prime it with some etching primer then spray it black, maybe use some duplicolor rubberized undercoating after that. ive had the undercoating on part of my truck axle after i welded on it for awhile now and it looks good and hasnt started rusting.

i would weld the holes and then around to help with keeping it more rustproof. if you didnt weld around, water would eventually get under there

i'd mig it. just do it in procedure so that it doesn't warp.

back step all welds.

Mig it! That dirty recycled japanese metal is difficult to tig. You will be just as happy.

thanks for the responses guys off to get the mig setup.

any thoughts on the weld-through primer that a body shop owner friend of mine is telling me i should use, or should i just weld it bare and deal with it as normal?

It cant hurt to use the weld thru primer, but Ive never had any problems with rusting as long as I put a few coats of paint on it. And if the paint is gonna scratch off the primer would too. What you do have to worry about is the penetration on the backside, where you cant get to it to paint...
