Default So what happened to my Tranny?

Well, one day i started to hear a rotational sound out of the right front of my car, at first i thought it might've been a wheel bearing so i took it to work and checked it and it was fine. took it out for a spin to let my lead tech to hear the noise and as soon as i hit boost in 2nd gear, the tranny gave out. car still ran, but did not wanna move forward, it reversed, but i didnt push it. Took the tranny apart and this is wat i found.

looks like the final drive and the countershaft was all that was damaged. lots of metal on the magnet.

the car made 470whp @ 24psi on a dyno dynamics and I daily drive it at 1bar.

just trying to figure out exactly what went wrong.

I'm considering doing a Trans Cuff on the rebuild, but I can't decide. Like i said, i daily drive the car and really like driving it on the freeway and running bikes

thanks,
-Zol

What FD are you running? I had this happen to my 4.785 setup. Oddly enough, it wasn't a true 4.785 setup due to a mismatched FD ring to my ITR countershaft.

Competition Clutch twin disc. And I've only raced it once at the track this year back in July on 25x8.7x13" M&H's, other then that, I rarely ever launch it. just spins and i dont street race

I hate to come up with the obvious answer, but pull it a little further apart and find out where some metal is missing from. That kind of damage doesn't come from a few shavings...there's a big chunk of steel that ain't where it used to be.

your pinion gear wasn't made for that much torque. That's why it happened.

I've seen this happened to a few cars around my area, really sucks.

well, i tore it apart and the only thing missing metal is the final drive and pinion. there is lots of big chunks of metal but again all from the pinion n final drive.

Obviously it's time to replace them. I have a tough time seeing how the FD could be cratered that badly without having a chunk of something get into it...that steel is pretty hard. It's possible that the broken FD gear tooth (on the diff) developed a stress fracture and came apart on it's own, but I haven't heard of a transmission doing that that wasn't abused heavily. 470hp should have been OK to a point. You weren't doing sidestep clutch launches were you?

thats why they put springs in the clutch to take some of the impact, but then again that may have not caused it, probably on time it just finally let go....because all it takes is one tooth to break and it is all over..

After staring at the pictures a bit more I think the culprit was the broken tooth on the diff gear. It split and took out the FD and everything else...it's just a guess from the pictures though. One hard launch too many could have weakend it enough to let go on the street. An agressive clutch, etc can contribute to that, preload or not.

Remember, all of these parts were designed for <200HP originally.

It is also possible that the FD was just bad. It may have been dropped at the factory while being built. But I have to say that the launches and from the racing are the culprit in this case.

Did you shim the CTR diff enough when you converted to SS carrier bearings?
