Default LSD or not?

Can someone tell me the best way to find out if my tranny is indeed an LSD. I had my car in the air the other day, and started it, and put it in 1st gear. I got out and my right front was spinning, and left front was not, so I put my hand on the right front and stopped it, and the left front started spinning. Right next to the H22A stamped code, there is a tag on the tranny with some #'s on it. Do those #'s decifer anything about the tranny or what! Thanks!

Sounds like you don't have a LSD. To be sure, put the car up on jacks (in 1st gear) and have a buddy spin one wheel forward. If the other wheel (the one you're watching) spins backwards freely you have an open diff. If it is just a bitch to move you probably have an LSD - to be sure put the car in neutral, if spinning one wheel forward makes both spin forward you have an LSD.

INCORRECT. stock itr lsd's make the wheels spin oppsite directions. but, imho, the original poster does not have a lsd.

with my quaife the wheels spin opposite directions.

1 wheel in neighbors lawn, 1 wheel in drive way. dump the clutch at 4k.

wheel in grass just sits there spinning, open diff
wheel in grass spins for a second, wheel on drive starts pulling car forward, LSD

I dunno, I never look at that stuff.

one wheel in grass + dump clutch = less time than deciphering numbers

when i jacked up my oem lsd b16 the wheels spun opposite directions so i figured it was non lsd, then i took out the axles to replace it and there was the bar across so its LSD.

you really notice it in cornering.

God damn I hate opening LSD topics because I always know I'll see the old "both wheels spin...blah...blah...blah..." **** when none of that matters.

THE ONLY WAY TO TELL IF YOU HAVE AN LSD IS TO YANK AN AXLE OUT AND LOOK THOUGH THE DIFF - NO PIN = YOU HAVE LSD

I have personally seen an ITR in neutral on a rack have one wheel spin the same direction when you spin the other, and then seen another ITR spin opposite ways. None of that **** matters!

"Both wheels leave black marks, you have LSD"

Wrong again. I can leave two thick black marks with my one wheeler peeler open diff SOHC tranny in my EF, so fuuck that theory.

In closing here's a pic for an explanation of the looking through the diff deal:

If you see a metal bar or diagonal thick pin in that hole you have no LSD - period. The picture above is of a stock ITR LSD diff; hence the cmpletely empty hole there.

The "LSD" posted above is nothing more than a spider gear shearing insert block like that of Phantom Grip, and it's not a real LSD.

When looking at a real LSD there still won't be a pin.

When looking at a spring loaded diff locker sort-of LSD you'll see a pin and those fat blocks of steel that end up breaking the spider gears.

I guess the honda helical torque biasing LSD isn't a true LSD either because it's only 1-way.

It all depends on the design. Most however do not use a cross shaft.

We can split hairs all day, but the bottom line is that if this guy wants to see if his tranny is LSD or not he needs to yank out the right axle so that he can look though the diff.

Shoving metal plates that lock the spider gears is a makeshift LSD. Sure a Honda helical is a 1 way LSD which isn't like a reconfiguable LSD that can be 1.5 or 2 way, etc. but it's **** tons better than any open diff with metal plates wedged inside. EDIT - I know there's a 18 page topic about how the OPM diffs rule/suck and I'm not trying to argue that point. They might work, but I'd never risk running one in a street car that is daily driven because they will break spider gears eventually if not sooner.

If you can't agree there then I don't know what else to say.

I've never seen a true LSD with a shaft running through it, but I'm not saying it's not out there somewhere. for the purpose of this guy trying to see if his Lude tranny has an LSD none of the "jack the car up and spin one wheel" bullshit is going to help him out.

I'm not picking at you Bense - I'm just saying above all else yanking the right axle will tell the guy the gosphel truth.
