Default Installing aftermarket fog lights

I'm putting in a pair of Optilux folg lights on my car and the directions say to splice into low beams if using as fog lights or into high beams if using as driving lights.

Is it actually necessary to splice into either lights to run them? If so, why?

Well, it's necessary to splice into some power source, in order to trigger the relay. You can also use the parking lights as the source, which is what I would do.

If you're using a switch, and you want them to be on Whenever,
Just tap into a source that is only on when you turn your parking lights on.

Then you can switch them on, or off whenever you have your lights on.

Then what is the wire that connects from the relay to the battery for? Primary or auxiliary power? Or just to power the switch?

The wire from the battery is what is actually powering the lights. This is where the relay comes in. When the switch is on and power flows from the parking or headlights into the relay, it closes the circuit and sends current directly from the battery to the fog lamps.

so it's impossible for me to have an on/off fog lights without tapping into my headlights?

On my other car, which i didn't wire, the fog lights can come on only when i have the key in 2nd position, independent of whether or not parking or headlights are on, and they shut off automatically if don't have the key in the ignition. i want that for my other car. how do i wire it that way?

No, it's not impossible, but I'm not sure why you want to wire them that way. At the very least, they should be wired so that the parking lights must be on before the fog lights can be activated. You want them to simply switch on whenever the ignition is on?

If that's really what you want, just tap the relay into an ignition-switched source rather than the parking lights or headlights.
