Default axle broke (maybe)

i was out driving my 89 hf, in 4th gear at about 1/4-1/2 throttle down a hill and it sounded like i popped out of gear, engine just revved up and not moving forward. tried changing gears, same thing. stopped, turned off and back on, didnt move, could still hear the gears changing, shaft was still connected to transmission and apparently moving. speedometer would move while i was in gear and giving it gas as well. no wierd sounds coming from anything. i'm thinking it's the axle, but i wont be able to check for sure till i go home for fall break and get it in a garage.

my question is if anyone has had this happen and can tell me if it is definitely the axle, or maybe the diff or something. seems like the tranny is getting the engine power since the speedo moves, it's just not getting to the wheels...

also, if it is the axles, i already have 91 ex hubs, would anyone suggest upgrading to those so i can get bigger axles? doing that would also mean bigger brakes and all that though, which i'm not sure i need...i took it on track back in august and they faded a little bit, but that was more because it was my first time and i was just on them too much. any suggestions?

Yeah it probably is the half shaft. Pretty easy to tell... jack the car up and try rotating the wheels. If the wheel moves but the axle doesn't there is your answer.

yeah, i know it's easy to tell. i just didnt have a chance to do it while i was here at school before i got it brought back home.

but my bigger question is whether i should go for the upgraded hubs if it is the axlex

What are you doing with the car? If tracking it, bigger brakes like that won't hurt. It'd also be necessary to do if you ever wanted to swap a B-series in there.

i dont know what tranny your using.... but if its a crx tranny then you dont have a half shaft... im thinking its the diff(spider gears), as horible as it sounds. new tranny here you come.... if you have a hf tranny you will feel a big diferance going to a si or even a dx tranny ;x

yeah i have a z6 in there with an si tranny. the axles and hubs are stock hf...i have tracked it back in august and that was the plan with this car. would the spider gear just give way like that though? i figured it'd have more grinding if a gear broke.

sometimes stuff like that happens lol, id pull the axels and turn the crank pully and see if anything is clunking around. if it was a axel u would feel it, or it would be just hanging there
