Default setting timing problems

i set my crank pulley to TDC to check things out and when i did this, i looked at my cam gears to see how they were lined up, here's what they looked like. sorry, but it was dark so the picture isn't all that great.

notice how the exhaust cam gear, if you look close you can see where it has the pr3, seems to be like it should where the arrow is in the "up" position. the intake cam doesn't seem to be in the straight "up" position, it looks to be a little off. the middle lines do line up, but seem to be a little lower lining up than i would expect them to be. if i were to turn the intake cam gear to the right, then the middle lines won't line up, but the arrow should be in the straight "up" position.

i have set both cam gears to where the "up" arrow is in the straight up position, but then the middle lines don't line up anymore, the intake one will be off.

any ideas on why this is happening?

should i just take off the timing belt, set both cam gears to where the "up" arrow is pointing up and put the timing belt back on even though the middle lines won't line up?

use what lines?

thats just the thing, the lines WON'T line up when both cam gear up arrows are pointing straight up.

The two lines in the middle should line up across 180 degrees flat. My car had a similar problem. Ran like crap until my friend decided to check it out. My intake gear was advanced a tooth. I eventually got a new timing belt and had everything lined up correctly. Does your car have idle and stalling problems? Also weak power?

it may have skipped a tooth... take your valve cover off... set the motor to TDC and check to see if the lines match up... if they dont ... retime it. simple as that

You have to take the valve cover off and remove the timing belt to adjust the cam gears.

The up marks on the cam gears dont go perfectly straight up.Its just a reference to which side goes on top.The lines by the teeth should line up horizontally, lined up also with the base of the head where the valve cover gasket lays. Also if your head is milled or you have an old timing belt, incorrect timing belt or water pump because of different size pulley[all b-series aren't the same]your never going to get it right.Try what I suggested first then look into the secondary things.Good luck! if you have problems keep posting.

The problem was that his intake camshaft was advanced or retarded a tooth because he was setting the timing based on the "up" arrows being straight up instead of the horizontal lines facing each other.
