speedo freakin out
well i just bought a 92 civic wit an ls swap and the speedo dosent work.(well some times it does) it used to be below the needle at the 0 mile an hour mark and it will jsut twak out and **** sayin im doin a 100. but some times it will jump to the correct speed but then cut out again. i think it mite be the speedo cable or i just need a new cluster. any input would be sweet.
hahaha, i had the same problem, driving on the freeway would jump to like 100 then would go all the back around clockwise. I had to remove the cluster and move the needle back around to the original place but when i get on the freeway again it would do it again. I ended up buying a new cluster.
i am dealing with the same situation. i just bought a 93 dx hatch. sometimes the speedometer will work and sometimes it won't. i'm sure it's just a wire problem like you mentioned.
try swapping out your VSS with one that works. If that doesnt fix it, you may need a new cluster. Try swapping that out with one that works too. Dont buy something unless you know you need it. Borrow a friends or something

he's got it, velocity speed sensor, 2 10mm bolts hold it in the tranny case, if it's just a hair out it won't work properly, but it breaks easily if you try and tighten it before it's in all the way.. easy fix

when i had this problem, i thought it was my vss too but it wasn't, even cleaned it out and still the same. Swapped it out with another friends and it wasn't. Do you have a CEL on? Check all the wiring on the back of the cluster but I can be pretty positive that it's ur cluster. It was for me.
But in any case, swap out your vss with another working one and start from there. Or you can swap another cluster in and see that too.

Mine doesn't work at all I replaced the vss and it still doesn't work and its still giving me a check engine light post up if you find a way to fix it.
i just had this problem when I replaced my DX cluster with an EX model with tach...the tach would usually sit there at 0...then jump to 6000 and sit there...then it jumped past 9000 and sat in the black area.
I made sure everything on the distributor side was tightened up...replaced my cap and the rotor...didnt seam to change anything on the tach...
so i took the cluster apart....re-positioned the needle and made sure it wasnt sticking anywhere...put it back together and now it works like a charm...

"Velocity speed" ---> redundant. Vehicle Speed Sensor
Also it's held to the tranny by one bolt. The other two hodl the VSS together.

my check engine light isn't on but the problem is the same for me. i will try the vss as well as messing with the cluster.

i had to just unplug the connector that is on the VSS, and plug it back in a bunch of times. It's aluminum pins in that connector, and aluminum oxidizes alot. If you plug and unplug a few times, it'll rub enough oxidation off to let it connect again....this worked for me; 2 clusters later
