Default Does this price sound right for a head-gasket?

Hey everyone,

My Del Sol Shas 187k on it and it just recently started overheating...So i checked the coolant only to find that there is nothing left.....Filled it up and checked the lines....nothing! So basically this happened again so i took it to the shop to get a pressure check of the system (I am @ college so i don't have the tools or location to work on it myself )

The Shop here told me its an internal leak in the head gasket.....so basically here is the run down from the shop to fix everything and replace a few things along the way that i would only assume need to be replaced to? (all prices include installation and parts)

Head Gasket kit - $600
Water Pump - $150
Coolant check - $ 30
Timing Belt - $ 122
Machine Shop $ 40

Total $970 (w/ tax and all the numbers i didn't round off)

Does this sounds right? Is it worth doing to a car with 187K...I mean i know Honda's will last thats why I might need to just get this work done....Is all the other stuff nessary or are they just trying to soak me.....I heard this is an honest shop.

I would love some HT guys opinions! Just to put my stressed out mind at ease

Thanks!

headgasket kit 600?

is that just the headgasket and labor?

i would go buy the parts you need and see how much labor would be to install them

or are those prices with labor too?

make sure the lube you up before they rape you. actually since you dont know how to do it it is going to be expensive. but assuming its a d15b7 or even a z6 you could buy like 3 motors for that price. i bought a full ls swap for less then that.

They just said after they take it off their going to give it to a machine shop to test for cracks and warping and whatever they do.

No kidding....My last car was a cavalier and i took off the head to swap it out....so i am assuming this wouldn't be to different....but like i said i can't do the work here with no tools and just a campus public parking lot.

Would you get it fixed or just get a new motor to swap in it?

thanks for the help so far

That sounds normal.

Personally I'd go to the local hardware store/mall & pickup a ratchet, a set of sockets, wrenches & do that **** myself in the parking lot.

When was the last time you had a new timing belt/water pump installed?

Me and my roomie were just talkin about doing the work in our housing complex......I just can't justify spending that much money on a base model Sol.....$900?

See the thing is I bought the car from a private party who did a bunch of manintence work before i got it....and i believe one of them was timing belt....So i could probably "X" that out....and i dunno why i would need a new water pump

Water belt & T-belt usually get replaced at the same time because if one is off you have easy access to the other.

expletive it, pull the ******* head off, take it to a machine shop, have them mill it, and then throw the SOB back on.

And rent a torque wrench from autozone, get your money back when you return the rental.

We were just talkin about renting the tools we don't have (the non-basics)....So hopefully between the 2 of us we can get this taken care of in one day and a few cases of beer....Hopefully we don't have to much and then forget how to put the car back together

Thanks for all the positive input
