Default How much should this really cost?!?!

My 95 del sol si 1.6 was leaking coolant recently so I took it into the shop figuring it was just a hose. They pressure tested the water pump and said that is where my leak is coming from, and that the coolant is also leaking onto the timing belt and they would both need to be replaced... the price I was quoted .... $800. I looked up the parts on ebay and it should only be about $60 for a new water pump and t belt, am I supposed to believe there is $700 worth of labor to change those? I am not all that knowledgeable about cars, so is this something I should let a mechanic fix or is it fairly simple to do with an online guide?

What do I do?

Also, this is a very general question, but I am deciding between an eclipse, 3000gt, or prelude for my next car, no newer than the year 2000, what is my best choice?

Thanks for your help if you reply.

no 700 bucks for labor. we changed the same 2 things on my friends eg in a matter of a couple hours. and saying general labor per hour averages around 70-85 bucks here in my area there should one be 140-170 buks of labor. so the place ur goin to must need the money.

as for ur next car. if its an eclipse gsx, 3000gt vr4, or prelude sh... i would say prelude, just for your money's sake. unless money isnt an issue then i would say vr4 ftw

id go with a prelude, and ur being ripped off, the prelude has a strong reliable motor, eclipse are shitty and unreliable, so are vr4's my freind goes through tranmissions like every 3 months, hes pushin 400hp though

$800 is high, try another shop.

I had the wife's car done at a dealer, and they did the timing belt, water pump, and timing belt tensioner (it was a prelude.) done for ~$500 out the door, parts and labor.

maybe it's higher for a del sol, but not THAT much more difficult.

It was < $650 for my 97's GSX's timing belt change, tune-up ( plugs, wires, distributer cap), and trued front brake rotors AT THE DEALER. This was a few years ago, but it still sounds like someone's hosing you big time...

I loved my eclipse, but the words crankwalk strike fear in the hearts of every 4G63 owner.... I love a 'lude as well, but what about a 240? Those cars are reliable, provide similar aftermarket support of the Hondas, and add the joy of RWD

They are probaly double charging labor for both pump and timing belt with they should be overlapping the labor since your at the belt when u change the pump...if I remember correctly mitchell labor on a honda water pump + timing belt runs roughly 4 hours (i believe its less something like 3.4). Tell them to overlap labor or find a shop that charges correctly.
