Default Resonator Box.. Lose power if removed?

I was told that removing my resonator box will do nothing but lose me a few ponies..

Anyone have more information about this?

Thanks in advance.

I pulled mine out over the weekend and have heard that I will lose power and that I will not lose power... funny how so many people believe the opposite on such a thing.

I plan on pulling the tube out of the resonator box and attaching it to the filter box, or just getting a Comptech Icebox and putting it in there...

The only reason why it could lose power is because it's sucking hot air. But that can be helped!!!

I wish the archive search worked better.

I think it was determined that the box is "tuned", and allows the intake air to pulse or something like that.

Don't base your decision on a 2-3 hp dyno difference. It is common to see 2-3 hp variances from one run to another with the car untouched!

Or just make your own ice box like a couple people on this board did.

Yeah, pull the resonator and run one of these down to behind the turn signal, cheap and easy:

Good butt dyno gains, stronger pull in the midrange and no loss up top, smooth VTEC crossover, a little louder than stock yet sounds really clean and smooth...

Like #700 says, do your own ice box, here is a step by step instruction :
http://www.geocities.com/bretq/DIY_Icebox_CAI.html
Or send $30 to Bret if you don't want to take the time to do it.

Add a K&N drop in, and performancewise you should be very close to the comptech set-up.

It also has to advantage of looking stock

I don't have any Dyno, but I can not believe that removing the resonator only and sucking hot air a few inches from the header could be a good thing. It is just common sense to me...

I don't know about hacking the stock airbox and making your own. I am sure that AEM and Comptech have some comptenent ME's or even ChE that can design the piping to its desired airflow pattern. I promise you that figuring out to keep flow to be laminar or turbulent is not an easy task.

Unless the DIY Icebox have this in mind during its design, then $30 is a steal.

Umm, there is NO hacking needed, a simple 20 minute install, if that, all bolt on...
Thanks.

I dunno I had an AEM and I saw the make it yourself Ice Box instructions and went to work one day on it, installed it, then sold the AEM the next day to a ricer down the street for $150.
I will never go back!

I realize that there was a lot of thought and testing that went into the design of the Comptech Icebox. I am not a ME, but when I fabricated my own DIY "Icebox" is used the same diameter tubing (3.0"), the same length tubing, same bends, similiar air horn as the Comptech Icebox. There are only a couple slight differences between Comptech Icebox and my "Icebox". The first difference is that Comptech's air horn is located behind the side turn signal and my "Icebox" air horn is located behind the front turn signal. The second difference is down pipe connected to the airbox, the Icebox has it's down pipe molded into the airbox, the "Icebox's" down pipe fits into the bottom of the airbox just like the stock resonator. Also both intakes have the same size airbox. So you can see that there should be no reason why the DIY "Icebox" shouldn't be comparable to the Comptech Icebox.

One last thing, the "Icebox" only requires the removal of the stock resonator and insertion of the intake tube. No "hacking" is required to the stock airbox or resonator.

Thanks. I thought the stock piping would be reused.
Bret, if can dyno your DIY kit, they will definitely sell like $1 draft beer on Octoberfest. You can then sell your kit for $35-$40 to make up the cost. I for one will get one since the Icebox quality is not near OEM in terms of quality of material and finish. The fact that the cover snaps on, instead of being held by screws bothers me.

Asahi (Trey) has recently contacted me about doing just that. You can go to https://honda-tech.com/zerothread?id=178659 to read his comments about this.
