The top hat is the upper purch for the spring to nestle in to. But the GC Top hat has a extended shock mounts so it could have more travel length on a lowered vehicle to optimize suspension travel overall.

Why would you get better ride quality? With stock shocks(you don't have struts) and springs, all you would do is force a whole lot more preload on the springs. With Stock shocks and aftermarket lowering springs, well in addition to probably being underdamped, you might gain back some shock travel that way. Personally, I'd fix the real problem, using stock shocks on a modified suspension.

UNderstood. Ill prolyl end up going with koni yellows and gc's

so if it gives more shock travel on a more lowered ride does it mean that once u hit a certain height, you will be better of with the top hat as far as comfort.
i explain it quite extensively in these threads. dont lose your head over the arguing and rampant ignorance. some ppl just dont get it.

Well basically its ******* bouncy. And sometimes, on the freeway i do bottom out the front. But i my biggest problem is hitting small bumps and bounceing afterwards. My friend has 96 coupe, lowered a little more than me on unknown slip on coilovers(kind of look liek gc's but without the lettering on the sides). But when i drove his car its noticably less bumpy
the springs are not designed for it. youd have to preload the spring too much to make them fit, if possible. with standard coilovers, youll have more slack to take up, its usually not an issue. if it is, you get shorter springs.
regular drop springs typically have "dead" coils at the top, depending on maker. they just function to take up space. if you cut those off, then i can imagine it would work, without affecting the spring rate of the spring. but then youd have to make sure you cut enough that ride heights are even.
