FD installation tool questions
I'm going to install a jdm fd on Saturday. Has anyone bought/used this one from Harbor Freight and did it work out ok for you? I was thinking I'm going to need the 12 ton press as well. Necessary? or use the car like I saw NC/FL guys?

I would like to know as well, because i do plan on picking up either a 12-ton of 20-ton press from Harbor Freight as well.
I believe AssPenny did purchase a press from HF but i am not 100% sure of this.

The puller you have linked is an inside puller. That could only be used for the bottom mainshaft and countershaft carriers. It probably wouldnt work on the cshaft carrier anyway. You don't need to replace either one during a fd install normally.
A press would make it all much easier, but it can be done without one. Without a press you will need a larger 2 or 3 jaw puller for the 3rd and 4th gears, but an outside puller not an inside one. Also a smaller 3 jaw for the top cshaft carrier bearing. (The one they sell at sears works but needs to be ground slightly). A strong bench vise and a couple wood blocks as well.
But yea if you can spare the cash a press is nice.

This is AnthonyL469 i cant log out of Andy's account...but to answer your question on the Harbor Freight bearing puller. Yes I have that exact puller and used it to pull my Countershaft bearing, the needles are a little to fat to reach the bottom of the other bearing so I just tore the bearings cage out with a screwdriver and pulled the case out using the bearing guides.
Ed,
Would you mind telling me which Sears puller you're referring to?

And which part needs to be grinded down?
After reading D's write up of the ATS 4.9, it seems like I won't need a press. In fact bfh > press?
I'm a lil nervous but f it. The party starts Saturday morning.
TIA!

The first one ( 2 jaw ) looks like it should work to get the 3rd and 4th gears off. You also need a smaller 3 jaw for the top cshaft bearing... the second link looks too big. You need somthing with small teef to fit the narrow gap between the two top bearings. I had to grind down the top edge of the jaws to fit it in there.
this one is the right style but there are several on the sears site. you probably want the smallest one
