Default Getting my muffler off

Hey I need to get my exhaust off my R to cut a section out to fit my new SMS header.

I have a SMS exhaust, magnaflow muffler...I got the bolts out, but I can't get the dam muffler off, the pipes are like seized together. Any suggestions?

Where do you think they are seized at? The flange?

Did you remove the exhaust hangers or the little rubber pieces that hold them to the body.

I ran into a problem like this before. What I ended up doing was getting a torch and heat up the joint. I then began to pound the muffler until it came loose. The muffler was dented from all the pounding, but it was going to be tossed anyways. Maybe the heat will soften it enough for you to pull it apart instead of pounding it.

Also it took two people to do this, one to beat the muffler and one to catch it when it broke loose.

Hope that helps.

You could also drop the rear LCA and just drop the exhaust as a whole. Should give you more leverage...

torch solves all... just make sure you lube it with never sieze before putting it back on.

umm the muffler pipe goes around the pipe coming off the exhaust...about 4 inches worth I would guess....i got a screw driver in between the flange and beat it in to seperate the flanges like 1/4" but still have alot to go...

so I take it heating it with a torch is the reccommended solution?

Confusing, but I think you mean its a slip fit. have you sprayed it with pb blaster? I would still recommend dropping the whole exhaust for better leaverage...

Hm, four inches? That's a pretty large area to torch. You might want to try Jim's idea.

i haven't sprayed it with anything...since I have to pay someone to cut and weld the exhaust anyway, I figured I would just pay them to take care of it all lol

They might charge extra, and also might say that they need to replace it

That should work out then. It will be alot easier with power tools and a lift!

very true....its too bad I didn't think of that and just drop the whole exhaust cause everything else is just hanging on the ground right now, all rubber bands off and everything
