Default LS 5th gear

Ok, i did search and only like 6 topics came up. what i want to know is, first of all i have a 97EK with the GSR swap and GSR tranny, i drive to and home from school (about 180 miles) quite a bit, and the 4K at 80mph is kinda annoying and i could save gas also with the LS 5th gear. some of the things i want to know are:

How much of a gear reduction is it, what will my RPMs me at aprox with the LS gear?

do all i need is the actually 5th gear or the 5th gear and a whole new counter-shaft or input-shaft?

any info would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance guys!

ls 5th: .714
gsr 5th: .787

as I understand it,
revs with ls 5th will be ~90.7% of those with gsr 5th at a given mph so where gsr puts you at 4k rpm, ls will spin about 3630rpm.

good info. i was gonna post this question also. 80 @ 4k is annoying. i usually have to cruise at 65-75 to get my revs @ 3-3.5k

long commutes suck.

you need the main and countershaft 5th gear. I did this to my b16 tranny. Highways are my friend now

how about using the LS final drive also? the ring gear and all.... what would that do to my overall rpm range? would it drop it to much to the point where ill lose acceleration?

4.4 to 4.2666 is a 3.1% difference. just run 205/55/15s instead of 205/50/15s and it will be about the same. not enough to justify dropping the tranny.

Good thread.

Ive got a boosted LS VTEC w/a B16 tranny. I put in a LS 5th about a year ago and I am SOOOOOOOO glad I did. Not only does it kep you from shooting yourself,.. It also helps with gas mileage.

change out and install an LS 5th and LS final.

Without all the numerical bullshit, you'll notice a definite drop in RPM's throughotu the powerband, and especially in 5th...

And you won't need to change anything

numerical bullshit? how else do you suggest finding out the differences?

definite drop in rpms throughout the powerband? Huh?

and how's he gonna get the 4.2666 ring gear to bolt to his gsr differential?
