Anyone ever built a muffler?
so heres my agenda. my muffler is VERY restrictive on my turbo LS powered DC2. when i took the muffler off the other day (because i was losing boost at high rpms) i noticed a VERY big difference in spool up and more power across the rev range. anyway....
my restriction is my Apexi World Sport exhaust. now, i dont want to buy anohter exhaust, and i have a welder, so i was thinking about cutting apart my apexi muffler and converting it from a chambered design, to a straight through design.
my plan is to remove all the baffling inside the muffler and weld a pipe with lots of little holes drilled in it from the inlet to the outlet (inside the can of the muffler) and packing muffler packing around it. would this work? do you think i could use some standard 2.5 inch piping to do this? his is the muffler packing im thinking about buying...

i know that it would be much easier to just buy a staright through muffler, but i REALLY like the look of the world sport and i think that fact that i made iit myself would be really cool. gimme some ideas, i might order the packing tomorrow

Meh. Some stainless steel chicken wire wound into a roll would do the same job and you can pick some up at Home Depot. I've also seen perforated sheet at the Home Depot but only in aluminum.
yeah but it wont be thick enought to weld into the muffler. maybe i'll take a trip to home depot tomorrow and see what they have

WTH ? I used to live like 15 mins from them. I had planned on making my own twin loop muffler one day but yeah...i have a car unworthy of that kind of work right now.
It's possible that they might have drops laying around that you could pickl up. Call and ask them. I might stop by there when I go home and see if they have anything mint for cheap.

i sent them an inquiry about an order hopefully they will say "yeah we have some crap laying around that we'll sell ya for 5 bucks"
it sounds like a good idea, it will sound completely different though, do you know how it will affect your inspection if you have to do that??? I just have a straight 3" exhaust with a resonator in the middle under the car, its not really that loud either.
you could also find a cheap 'blue bottle' or 'red devil' type bottle muffler of the appropreate size and scavenge the baffle tube from it, they don't restrict flow but they quiet a lot better than flat perf tubes.

i know it will sounds totally different, but im down with that. i want to be able to say, thats i custom muffler that I built. i think it will be cool. and inspection? doesnt matter. pre-96 is only a visual in NYS, and i have TONS of friend with inspectors liscences. i have no cat, no emissions equipment and im running with the 02 sensor switched OFF in uberdata and the motor burns a little oil. im a gross poluter

then do it and post pics, Ive seen people cut up thier stock mufflers and gut them but it will be cool with a WS, cause they are usually so quiet. just keep the cuts hidden so it looks clean

steel wool will work tell it melts or rust and if you think im joking about it melting pinch some off a touch a lit match to it
. try copper screen and maby wrap it around the perf pipe might work
