how to notice a bent valve???
so i just recently got my b20 vtec. i did notice that it sounded like the valves were hitting the pistons or what i can describe as a tapping noise. Maybe I'm a little tired, but it seems like it's a bit louder now. How do I make sure it is a bent valve or not?
One of the symptoms of a recently bent valve (valves not adjusted) is a ticking noise beacuse the lash is out of adjustment. As mentioned above, perform a compression test. You can purchase a cheap tester for about $30. Do not worry about the peak value of the numbers, but focus on their consistency.
ticking noise is just adjusment of the valves...
if you have a bent valve the car will not idle correctly
it will stuter....

cool. i talked to the guy who installed my head, he also says the same thing so i'm a lot relieved. Going to be adjusting it soon, and get it down to Church or Bubba to tune

You are correct that the ticking noise is adjustment. However, a bent valve will not seat properly and will be out of adjustment. You are correct about the idle, but other problems can cause that as well.

It is easiy to do yourself. Plus you can let the car sit overnight to properly cool before adjusting the valves. Check out this link:

Although not required, a tool like this ($12.99) really helps with a B-series VTEC head.

That does help alot, but since I don't have one I just set the adjustment screw a little loose so when you tighten the lock nut it comes out right. Takes a couple tries to figure out how loose makes it come out perfect but it can be done. Something to think about.

there is a test you can do with a dollar bill. take it and fold it in half and put it on the exhaust and if it sucks it in then you got a bent valve. and if it isnt then it wont suck it in. try it and see if it works.
right now, i fixed it but for some reason i still hear some tapping noise. could it be possibly the bearings are gonna go out soon? dont hear those tapping noise when idle though, only when stepping on the gas.

that would only test for a bent exhaust valve though, right?

lmfao..
get a compression tester best way
if you dont have a compression tester, get a hose into the cyl's and blow into each of them if air comes out of your intake manifold its ur intake, if it comes out of your headers, or exhaust or you hear anything around your exhaust manifold..its ur exhaust valves, its ghetto but when you need a quick diagnoise you do what you gotta do
