Default Supertech valves and my experience.

Well I decided to upgrade my top end and I purchased some supertech valves,S2 cam-retainers-springs. After riding for about 200 miles i realized my car was slowly getting slower. I did a compression test and the numbers were 220-220-160-220. I tore my engine down and noticed that all of my exhaust valves seem to be curling up on the edges. One was pretty bad and had warped to where light would escape through the champer with a flashlight in a dark room. I took it out and this is how it looks.

You cant see the edges well but they are all curled up.

Anyone else had this happen?

What do the intake valves look like? Hard to tell in your pics but is the damage on the chamber side of the valve or the 45 degree seat/port side?

Intakes look fine, the damage is to the outside, but on this particular valve it warped on chamber side.

Reason I ask is I've seen that due to valve/valve interferance. Just enough to clip as the intake and exhaust valves pass each other but not hang it up. As the valve rotates it just "machines" itself to the shape I think your pic shows.

May not be the problem in your case but it looks surprisingly similar.

speaking of supertech valves, thats the same thing that happened to me with my S2 valves. I think they're the same. but it happened on the chamber side as well on the exhaust side.

^ agreed.

We are running Supertech valves/valvetrain to 10,000rpms+ on some of our motors. In fact, they are the only valvetrain we recommend.

Sounds more like installation error or somehow they're burning.

Yea, now that you said it, it does sound like a tuning issue maybe? Maybe human error in the build.

maybe a incorrectly installed valvesprings? Pull the valves too high up? or a bad valvejob?

I am going to make a WAG or maybe go on a limb make a SWAG (wild *** guess or scientific wild *** guess) and say your head "sucked up the valves".

I am inclined to say that it is not the valves fault. I talk to ***** from Supertech frequently and know their general philosphy and they are very sophisticated in their design, testing, and quality control. Heck, ***** even knows statiscal process control to statistically test if their manufacturing process is running properly.

Send your head to DonF and he can fix your problems for a very reasonable price. After 35 years of building 4 valve motors he might know something useful . Don's head work is done by a master machinist on a Serdi live pilot system. More importantly Don's conservative about valve jobs and seat angle placement so crap like this won't happen.

so is it still safe to run supertech SS valves with Skunk2 cams (stage 2), springs and retainer? cause i just bought this same setup, just to make sure the motor is built right, right?

I have seen that on some Ferrera valves. It was in the cylinders with bad rings. We decided it was detonation in those cylinders because of the fuel dilution, running the valves too hot.
