Default GT28RS vs GT2871 on a stock/built B16 motor - Read different opinions, want clarification!

Ok, I have been searching the archives here and on evans tuning regarding the differences.

I plan on dropping in a small GT series turbo with a B16A2 swap. I was considering the GT28RS as I am not looking for a whole lot more power and don't want to build a motor per say - . If I do build a motor, 400 whp will be more than enough once the motor is built.

I plan on doing the drop-in t3/t4 housing which eliminates internal wastegate. I have read posts by flamenco-t that suggest to get the .82 AR instead of .63 AR which allows for breathability on high revvers. This post may have also said the 2871 is a laggy dog with peak hp while the GT28RS provides a fat curve.

But, other posts say the GT28RS runs out of steam by 8K and that the GT2871 is a better turbo. Also, they suggest getting the .63 AR on the 2871R to reduce lag while some others still argue the .82 AR is the best for honda motors.

I am torn on which route to take, so advice is appreciated!

My one reason to turn towards the GT2871R is the fact that more hp is possible with this turbo in case I do have to build an engine someday. I can avoid buying 2 turbos. If someone can say that the GT28RS will be able to do more with higher boost levels (>10 psi), that would steer my way towards the GT28RS

I am assuming someone on here may have had the same mindset as me and taken this approach.

Hard part with h/t is the fact that there are conflicting opinions for amost everything. evom is no different, actually.

Anyways, Anyone running/has run a GT28RS pr 2871R with a stock and/or built B16 motor? What sorta hp and tq are you getting? When did you see spoolup by? I would appreciate any info.

I was thinking of a peakboost ac compatible kit with this turbo added in.

Thanks much!

I run the GT28RS on my D16Z6 and I have the .82ar it really have a good top-end similar to my old SC50 .63ar. Im around 300whp on a MUSTANG dyno around 16 psi. Now im running 17-18 psi on the street and its a blast to drive. I like this turbo cuz the response is really good and the transition between aspiration/boost is really smooth. But I dont know if the .63ar would have been better in the midrange thats my only regret.

If you go with the 71R go with the .63ar thats for sure, if it was me the decision would be clear on that. Lots of people find the 71R laggy and they run the .82ar

Oh yeah and personnaly if you want to acheive 400whp go with the 71R you have no other choice but let me tell you that the RS on the street is really fun, you probably gonna be ok with only 350whp but with a good powerband....

I do have the DZ16 motor in my car right now. makes me want to throw a turbo on it right now - But, I love VTEC more. That sounds awesome. I think a GT28RS is more than adequate. If I can get 350 hp with a built motor and more boost, that would do me fine. Better than the JRSC option I was considering....

^^ oh yeah its gonna be a lot more adequate that a JRSC thats for sure. The only thing that you have to decide is which turbi you will get on this mighty RS... .63ar or .82ar

I really like my 82ar but I dont know how the car would be with the .63ar ??? There is not that much people using the .63ar on the GT series... but its maybe something you might try.

Flamenco-T said the .82 AR is better for high-revving VTEC motors which breathe better up top. He said the .63 would be choking the motor!

If you get a gt2871, get the .63 ar

If you get a gt28rs, get the .82 ar

Stock B16 (may switch to a 1.8 bottom in future)
Stock red line
Dont want to run out of steam by 8K

GT28RS or GT2871R?

I forgot a fellow h-t user name but his setup was a bone stock b16 Full race Kit with Gt28rs .82 but he was pushing 330-350whp?But yeah chatted with him couple times and he told me its fun to drive.I say the 71r is a good turbo for a semi built motor if you want more power later on.
