Yup...gutting the cat would basically be like running a test pipe, just without quite as good of flow, since its bigger around then the actual pipe. But yes it would make it free flowing and free up some horsepower. Just like a raceheader does.

any downsides to this? i dont work much with exhaust's anyway but i dont want any backfire so what if you just gutted the back half of the cat? cause isnt it diffrent layers of that honeycomb stuff?

and how much louder would it be

YES, after you gut the cat, your gonna **** up the flow because of the way the cat is designed... inside of a cat has a larger diameter than the rest of the piping... your exhuast flow will suffer. either get a real test pipe, get a race header, but don't gut the cat.. besides if you gut the cat.. well it's not cheap to pick up again @ honda. OEM Catalytic Convertors are somewhere in the neighborhood of $800-$1,000!!! Granted you could always find one used... it's better to just not have to worry to ever coming to that

just buy a race header and you could get custom piping, I know people dont like dc race headers but i wouldnt gut the cat. But you do what you want, Im just saying i Wouldnt do that and good luck to wich ever you decide to do.

People are right, stock cats do cost a lot of $ to replace. Just buy a race header, or if you can..find someone that can make a test pipe of the same diameter.
