Default having a problem refilling coolant after swap....thaught i knew how but...

okay so i thaught that to fill up the coolant after a swap from dry, i had to fill up the rad, then run the motor without the rad cap on, and as the coolant went down, to keep topping it off....i must be wrong because the level doesnt go down, even when it reaches operating temp....what have i done wrong?

i assume that there is air in the lower rad hose not allowing it to go up to the coolant tube and in terms, the water pump....maybe?

the T-stat MAY not be opening but its brand new so im not sure that its this, but it has NOT been tested

at operating temp, the coolant lines that go to the heater core, intake manifold and upper rad tank are hot, lower rad hose is cold

im ASSUMING (from my gut) that its the first thing, but im not sure, alas, that is why im asking, let me know what you guys think.
thanks,
SRH

I always put a rag on top of the tank, and hold it down while i pump the hose with my hand.

I pour coolant into my radiator until full. Then I like quad-fold a rag, and put it over the top, and hold my hand down. Then I pump the hose that goes from the top of the tank to the block. Burp it back into the motor, essentially.

don't forget to turn your heater on.

You basically have to do this till it recycles and can flow through on it's own. After that, it's just filling it while running.

Well, if you're reaching normal operating temperature, it should be fine. Mine didn't go down that much when I added coolant after a swap.
