So I lent my dad my car a few weeks ago, he came back a day later and said the speedo and odo stopped working. I checked the VSS, it was bone dry. It had been driven in some really heavy rain, and I figured it just shorted out. So...yeah I don't really know what to check next. I thought about resetting the ECU and maybe it'll magically work again, but everytime I think of that I don't have a 10mm socket around. Any other suggestions?

try changing out the VSS for one that works. If that doesnt work, then it is probably your actual gauge cluster. Try swapping each of them out with known working ones, that will help you figure out what is wrong.
