air leak
my brother gave me his 95 civic ex, and it sounds like its rev. ing all the time, its in bad shape, He said its an air leak. I was wondering how i would go about to fix it, could it be a gasket somewhere?
Steady high idle, or up and down?
The throttle plate, and IACV and FIV, control the air the engine gets. The more air, the higher the RPM. (Can cause the up/down idle.) If these components check out...
Look for unplugged or cracked vacuum hoses. You can check for leaking gaskets by spraying suspect areas with a squirt bottle of water. The idle should drop as the water temporarily plugs the leak.

its idles up and down. And also after i come to a stop and i go it will start to bogg down, and if im flooring it it starts to bogg, it dose it in all the gears.
A vacuum leak. The Idle Air Control valve is trying to compensate for the vacuum leak by opening and closing, hence the surging idle. Let's see. The only places for a vacuum leak are:
1. intake to head gasket
2. throttle body to intake manifold gasket
3. PCV valve/hoses
4. Brake booster
5. vacuum lines (i.e. to EVAP purge solenoid, EGR, fuel pressure regulator)
6. TPS gasket, IAC gasket
7. injector o-rings
8. any others guys???
Go through this list and check off each potential problem, one by one. I bet you have a vacuum leak. The way that I check is with a smoke machine inserted into the fuel pressure regulator vacuum line.
