Default Starting the car first time of the day...Got a question...

First crank of the day, or if i havent driven the car after 8-9hrs the car has a hard time starting. It starts really hard, and sometimes wont start. I usually have to turn it over, then turn the ignition off. Then it cranks immediatley the 2nd time. Im begining to think that i have a leaking injector possibly?? It has had a strong gas smell after start up a few times. Ive changed all the ignition, has a new optima battery, and the starter is good. Any opinions?? Its a 91 si

hate to break it to you but it may be the fuel pump going out it is not holding pressure cause that is the same thing that is happening in my tahoe

maybe its time to change to a better oil.

the gas smell is probably from the large amounts of fuel that get dumped in every time you start it up.

i dont think its your fuel pump because it wouldnt explain why it turns over properly the second time.

if you turn the ignition switch on off a few times and smell gas without starting the car, you have a fuel leak somewhere...the ignition primes the pump...sniff around to see whats leaking

I have a slightly hard start the first start too. but if I turn on the the igniton let the check engine light come on and then go off then start it, it will start right up. So if i let the fuel pump completely prime before starting. I think it has something to do with the return line holding pressure but not sure.

I dont believe my problem is an leaky injector because this happened with both motors I had in the car. So I think it has something to do with the fuel pump/return line.

Any ideas anyone? I think oldskool might have the same problem.

I know its not the fuel pump. Ive replaced these several times on my other car.And when they go out, they go out. A pump is either good or bad, there is no in between. Dont think its and oil issue either, Im using Mobil 1 full syn. And it just did it this morning....its COLD. But it didnt smell like gas at all.

exactly my case...i still let my pump prime and it still happens esp when its really cold out...but the thing about the return line makes sense i guess..and i know im not leaking gas

This is the case with me too. The first time starting it doesn't want to start, but the second time it's ok, only happends when it's cold...
I don't know how to fix it, but If you have a block heater plug it in. fires right up every time, and effortless too.

run some fuel injector cleaner

are you running an aftermarket Fuel pressure regulator?

Sounds to me like you just need more fuel at startup.....and that could be a few things, clogged injectors, faulty injectors.....

one things for sure, its definitely fuel related.

well if it is cold out side then check your battery. and for the return line to be clogged it would have to be a nice size chunk to clog it. my tahoe in the first crank of the day after it primes a couple of times it smells like gas but no leak its prob just the cat cold so raw fumes are going out
