Horn Problems... current draw?
Hey guys,
So, my horn doesn't work... one of the few problems my car had when I got it. So I take the horn off and hook it to a battery to eliminate that -- it works fine. I then check to see if I have voltage on the proper wire going to the horn -- that seems to check out okay.
Well... in the column I got nothing. So, I have a little wire that was dangling down in my fuse panel area when I got the car that is +12 volts. I decided to hook it onto the area that should have 12 volts in the column. Well, it blows the 2 amp fuse on that small wire immediatly when I press the horn button. When I replaced the fuse with a single thick strand of wire (~5-6 amps capacity) the horn sputtered almost inaudibly before melting that wire in two.
So... my question is this... how much current should the horn be drawing? I don't imagine it should be all that much so I am a little concerned about what is happening. Perhaps what I'm doing is totally wrong since I don't have a full wiring diagram handy... I was a little adventurous since I had a fused wire to play with, but at this point I don't want to try anything else just yet.
Any help is appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Got it figured out. I was hooking the wire up to the horn incorrectly, which is why I put a fuse on it, just in case :-)
I traced the problem down to the contacts in the column that connect the horn through the rotating part. I have proper connection up to that point. For now I wired up an external button for my horn, and I'll probably pull the wheel and fix the OEM buttons at a later date.
