Default Finally Paid Some Bills Time for a Camera Mount. Suggestions/ Experiences.....?

A little while back I acquired a Sony DCR-DVD403 digital camcorder to use specifically on the bike. I've seen one or two mounts on the mtns. but nothing exciting. I particularly don't care for the 'sticky cups' ones and prefer ones which allow for constant viewing of speedo/ tach, since I rarely pay much attention when in the twisties.

If you have a camera mount post up your camera/ mount setups (front/ rear/ helmet, all welcome)as well as your experiences, opinions, cost, & even clips in action.

**I searched pretty thoroughly and didn't see any threads related to the topic, so hopefully with your help we can make this an informative reference.

A budy of mine has one that mounts to the gas filler cap.. 10 min install, the video is very clear and steady... you can see the tach/speedo, and right through the windscreen. there is little to no wind noise, but you can hear the engine revs very well. he got it on ebay for $35

I have the Helmet Camera one that Scarey listed. It does a damn good job, but it's not cheap. Plus, the wiring for the battery pack can be sketchy (mine fell apart), but YMMV.

I also bought one off eBay for cheap, and it worked just fine (if you look in my PutFile account, you'll see the video I took with the camera mount). That one is easier to setup, but you are more limited in your viewing/mouning options.

That's the one I was leaning towards. I couldn't access my photobucket to upload the pics for some reason. It looks pretty solid and they seem to have a design which does not interfere with the gas cap. I like it. Are you or anyone you know using it? I just don't want to buy some mount from some .com company and have my camera snap off, come loose, etc. because of cheapo quality.

Got it. Looks great. Only thing I noticed is that your speedo/ tach is not shown. Is that normal or is that because your style bike or camera?

PS. - Any chance you have footage of your last epic ride "Lost River Battle Stage?"

No LRBS stage footage but I want to go back to film it.

It's more a function of the bike than anything. Mine sits pretty low so I'd lose visibility if I wanted to shoot it in the picture. Besides, I know how fast I go, I don't need the internet to too.

K, so I order the mount from Sportbikecam.com and I am really impressed with the craftsmanship and eager to install. I go back to their site and find that while glancing through the FAQ, DVD based media cameras will not work! WTF?!

Something about conflict with the spinning of the disc and the physics of the bike. I'm assuming gyroscopic forces working against each other and the more dominant forces canceling out the small output motor spinning the disc. I briefly considered this when I first acquired the camera but I swear I've seen people with DVD's cams on bikes before. Furthermore, wouldn't cams with hard drive type storage would have a spinning disc somewhere as well (yet they do not seem to be affected)?

Anyhow, sorry if this is common sense to most of you but I am pretty new to camcorder technology. So has anyone dealt with this situation?

I didn't know about the disclaimer about using DVD-media-based camcorders. Maybe it has to do with the laser?

If you want, I've got a Hi8 camcorder that I'll trade with you....

Any disc based media pretty much sucks for motorsports related filming.

Good ole fashioned cassettes are where it's at, at least until flash media comes a little further.
