Cannot stop this leak, what should i do
Hey everybody,
Okay, I just go finished reinstalling my tranny yesterday. I put a new seal in between the two pieces of the tranny and it does not seem to be leaking. I also replaced both driveaxle seals with the tranny out. The passenger side seems to be good, but the drivers side is leaking, wtf.
I checked this morning and the leak has def slowed down, but that is because i have not driven it.
Why is this seal still leaking, i have had problems with it in the past so that is why i decided to install it with the tranny out.
Is it possible that i could have pushed the seal in too far (i used a socket to make sure the seal went in squarly)
Or is it possible that there is a leak from somewhere else on the tranny which i highly doubt.
Thanx, and sorry for the long post

Im pretty sure its not the engine leaking, because i just replace all the main seals on the engine and i replace the rear main seal when i had the tranny off.
But lets just say it is the engine, where should i check for leaks since it does not look like it is coming from the valve cover or the head gasket
what other places should i check for leaks
I mean any kind of leak, not just oil

the color of the oil is the color it is right when you poor it in (brand new, kind of a caramel color)
and also im pretty sure its coming from the driver side axle because I CAN SEE IT LEAKING FROM THERE.
Also just to let everyone know, both axles are "brand new" i picked them up from autozone so i guess they are really rebuilds but they are in new condition
thanx so far for the input

the tranny side of the car is leaking, right by the drivers side axle and the oil is running back onto my cat and exhaust and it stinks when i drive. That is why i want to fix it so bad.
if it is the cam seal i will know for sure in about a month because im going to be installing a new cam. But untill then im pretty sure its gotta be a driveaxle seal, why cant i get it to stop leaking

Well when I had my last EF hatch, the owner before me installed axel seals and they both leaked. I removed the engine to do a swap and when I removed the seals he had installed I found out why they were leaking. The part where the seal goes into had been gouged with a screwdriver or some sort of sharp object. I guess when he remeoved the old ones he did it. I am not saying you did it,but maybe someone before you did it. Its worth a try. Good luck with it.

there is no owner before since he has installed new seals himself.
to the op:
take the axle back out, i highly doubt the axle is the problem. the only thing i can think of is you damaged the seal while install, this is why you are still leaking.

Did you even read what I wrote? Like I said the previous owner scarred the tranny where the seal goes in. Behind the seal. Do they read in Earth Kingdom?
Thanks guys, I looked and there is a small scratch where the seal goes (about and inch long, not very thick and not very deep)
Do yall think this is really what is causing such a big leak, I mean the scratch is not that big
WHAT DO YOU GUYS RECOMMEND FOR FIXING THE SCRATCH???????????????

The seal must sit flat. Maybe a piece of sandpaper could get rid of it. My tranny was so screwed though I just junked it. Hope you get this problem fixed.
like JJ said, just make sure the seals are square in the bore and not pushed too far into the tranny, also using a little rtv sealant between the seal and tranny housing will take care of any scratch that small, a gouge no.
