On some cars different intakes will indeed sound different. For example, an AEM CAI on a Type R sounds a lot different than a J's Intake.
Think of it like a wind instrument. Different notes are produced by blowing air or covering up holes...don't you think the same would apply to air induction in an automobile?

But how many different style of intakes are there for the EM/ES? There are 2 different mainstream styles that I know of... The Injen IS, with a flat elbow:

and the others, which have a rounded elbow. Like the AEM and the K&N.
