Default Oil leak location?

Ok so I seem to have a oil leak some place on the back of the block that is dripping right on to my headers; now as far as I know the only likely place to check would be the oil filter, but I was just wondering if you guys had any other suggetions of places to check on the back of the block, before I decide to just go ahead and pull the filter off. Also I was just wondering what type of oil filter you guys recomend, I currently have a fram but have heard some bad things about them, any suggestions?

almost forgot Its an Ls block with a Gsr head. Thanks!

I have always had good experiences with Mobil1 filters, but you can never go wrong with OEM.

Fram is garbage. I had a thing at the parts stor I worked for a while back, and it had an OEM Motorcraft and a Fram filter. The Fram was all flimsy and thin with the filter material. If was crappy, especially when compared with a manufacturers.
