Default possible poor man's type R head gasket leak???

ok here is the story. from begining to end.

first off..

Fans work. ALWAYS on ( toggle switch)
thermo is good ( checked in hot water on stove)
new water pump
new temp sending unit in head.

gsr block
b16 head
all BRAND new honda OEM parts inside the motor ( complete overhaul)
stock sized pistons ( no overbore)

NO WHITE SMOKE OUT OF TAIL PIPE
NO LOSS OF COOLANT
NO COOLANT IN OIL
NO OIL IN COOLANT

FLUSHED entire coolant system with a hose, including the heater core and radiator.

SYSTEM HAS BEEN BLED ON INCLINE WITH HEATER ON FOR EXTENDED PERIOD OF TIME> NO AIR IN SYSTEM!!!

car gets hot when i mash on it hard SOME TIMES.

within a 25 second span ( while under HARD acceleration) the temp will go from normal operating temp to right below the H and then back down to normal after i put it in 5 th and start coasting..

it only does it half the time.. some times i can drive it hard all around town and it will not over heat. then other times it will get hot on the pulls i do..

i KNOW it is getting hot because the overflow tank gets filled up when it gets close to H on one of those runs..

.................................................. .................................................. ....................Above is the way it is now .

earlier last week the issue was way worse and the car could idle all day and not get hot but as soon as i started down the road it would over heat. SO i replaced the water pump and bled the system hard core and replaced the thermostat etc etc and the car wouldn't even get warm hardly. i drove it 120 miles to get it tuned on the dyno, did 20 pulls on the dyno and drove it 120 miles home with NO issues of over heating...

now all the sudden it warms up before i get 2 miles down the road and will STAY at normal operating temps at highway speeds for my entire drive to work ( 60 miles) and ONLY gets hot when i really mash on it through the first three gears at least...and only then it is just every other time.

any ideas??? im about to install a new head gasket but im going to do a leak down test first since i just snugged up my headbolts from 60 to 63 ft lbds..

Take another look at the thermostat housing where the heater hose and bypass hose connect to it. If you swapped them by accident, you could have those kinds of issues. Good luck.

well it was an all the sudden thing .. so if it was the heater pipes then it would have been happening since i put the car together...

dumb possibility though.... could my fan turning the wrong direction be the reason for this?? i checked it last night and it is pushing air towards the front of the car through the radiator.. not pulling it through

im gonna put the cams back in tonight and see if re-wiring the cam fixed the problem...

That's definately a HUGE factor to consider with the symptoms that you have observed. Fortunately, this is easy to correct: Since the fan motor is DC, all you have to do is swap the pins in the male [bold]OR[/bold] female end of the connector to get the correct spin on your cooling fan.

final symptoms:

does it EASILY ( first pull) after driving on the highway for extended periods.. BUT only when i mash through gears HARD..

fills up coolant resivoir

bottom radiator hose COOL.. top one HOT...

If its filling up the coolant resevoir--99% of the time it points to a blown HG--also a compression test might not show you anything. Just 3 weeks ago I had symptoms of a blown HG and the compression test turned out perfect--and it WAS a blown HG come to find out.

well no matter how the car is overheating.. weather it is a HG or another reason.. the resivoir will fill up right??

could this be a bad radiator cap??

Glad to hear that you got the fan spinning correctly, now it's time to look at some other things...

I understand the logical process that led you to dismiss this, which is exactly why I would check that (before anything else) if you towed it into my shop. Take another look and tell me what you see.

did a leak down test and no leakage from ANY cylinders..

there is a possibility that my heater hoses are not hooked up correctly... the GSR block with the b16 head made heater hoses VERY confusing...

ill take some pics of it and post them later..
