Default Rim or axle or tranny problem? Wierd shaking when turning.

Hi Guys and Girls,

My old teg did this, but it was a 92 and I just expected it because the car was ancient.

When driving straight, the car behaves normally and no shakes/shimmies.

When turning slightly at normal/highway speeds, it seems as though the steering wheel shimmies slightly from side to side at a low frequency. The car also seems to do this when coming out of a corner from a stop.

Any experiences like this and what were your findings? My old teg did this, but much worse, and no matter what rims or steelies I put on.

TIA!

How do the tires look? Pressures? Check the easy/free stuff first. Also, what did the road look like? Pitted or grooved? Also, what tires are on the car?

Hi Dave, the car has brand new Falken 512s. This phenomenon occurs on all roads, I've noticed it over the last few months.

Thanks!

Have you checked the tire pressure recently? Double check that too.

I would think if it was tire/wheel related, you would probably feel it while going straight as well.

I had a similar issue before with my R while making very slow turns. Felt as if the front of the car was wobbling back and forth. My car had been in an accident so I assumed something was outta wack. But I happened to change axles during a build up and noticed that it no longer had this wobbling at slow turns. Fast forward a bit, ended up breaking an axle, so I swapped the other axle back in, problem seemed to return. Had the car on jack stands, rotated the tires, and I could visually see the axle wobbling as I turned the wheel. I do not know if this is what was causing the problem, and I never noticed much wobbling or vibration while going straight. So my suggestion is to set the car up on jackstands and spin the front wheels and see if you notice any movement or play in the axle shafts, both with the steering wheel straight and at full lock. Might also want to do the 12-6 and 9-3 wheel test to check for bearing or bushing problems.

i have the same issue that RTW was discribing. at full lock in a parking lot it feels like my car shakes back and forth. im just waiting to replace the axle until it breaks it runs perfectly smooth until i go slow at full lock

sounds similar to the problem you are having i would check your axles

Thanks for the advice. I'll rotate the wheels first and see if it's still doing the same thing. If it does, then I'll check the axles.

This makes sense, since my old teg had this problem no matter what wheels I had on there.
