Weird brake question
Hi guys,
I recently changed front brake pads on my 01 LX. After doing so, after a few miles of driving the passenger side started to smoke up and I could smell burning rubbers. After taking it apart, I noticed a bit of the piston's "rubber seals" or boots or whatever u call it have been ripped and melted on the rotor...I believe this was caused by the rubbers getting caught between the piston and the rotor.
Well, only a small portions came off and the rest of the rubber seal is still around the piston. But after a few weeks of driving, I notice the the bakes started to not be able to dis-engage, or it's locking up. It would lock up for a while before returning to normal...and this would happen intermittely. Now after about a month driving around with this condition, I notice the inner brake pad is wearing out about half as fast as the ouuter pad.
Did I do something wrong when I changed the pads and is my caliper done?? I'm actually an above average mechanic. I've done dozens of brake jobs on various kinds of cars, but this one is really puzzling to me, any help would be appreciated.
Sorry about the long post and thanks for reading.

Well you stated that the "rubber seals or whatever" made contact with the rotor. If any rubber material on a caliper made contact with a rotor that would mean you drove the car without brake pads installed. The outer pad wearing out faster than the inner pad suggests that the sliding pins are stuck.

It would be pretty difficult to have the rubber piston seal come into contact with the rotor given there is a new brake pad that is a couple of inches thick between it and the rotor....
Unless, you didn't take care to put some silicone on the boot before you pushed the piston back in it's bore, then when you swung the caliper over the pad, it caught on the pad and bascially peeled back. so if that happend, you have been driving around without a dust seal, and dirt, water, etc could have gotten into the piston and would require a rebuild or replacement and would account for your sticking brake..
