Default brake pad question...

if my brake pad is loose in the caliper... does this mean my piston is frozen? or will a brake pad get so worn out that at a certain point, it can't extend far enough to press the pad into the disk? is there supposed to be a clip at the bottom which holds it or something? the pad can be moved by hand a good 1/8 of an inch from left to right.

i found how too's on how to change brake pads, but all of them have expired pictures and i couldn't see what i wanted to see...

any help is appreciated!
thanks

there is a retainer clip at the top and bottom. shouldn't be too expensive at autozone or whatever.
