Default Diagnosis of transmission grinding?

alright, I am looking at picking up a gsr ys1 b-series cable tranny, but the seller has told me that it aparently has a high rev grind (it grinds when its in the 7000 rpm range). The previous owner suggested it might have just been a fluid issue, but I am just wondering what kind of internal problems could cause this type of grinding. gears bad? synchros? or could it just be low fluid?

I'm not a transmission guru, and I have never encountered problems with any transmissions I drive on, so rebuilding and diagnosing transmission problems is something that I have never had to worry about. But I'm getting sick of this LS tranny, and I want to have some sort of idea of what this GSR one might need before I commit to buying or settle on a price. Oh, and I'd be crackin it open to add an LSD before install anyway.
Thanks in advance.
