Default A steep (and expensive) learning curve ...

I posted here yesterday with questions about my first time drag racing. Well here are the results. Pulled the normal stuff out of the car, drove 2 hours to NE dragway, got out of tech fairly quickly. I got there late and so my first run was about 8:00pm, I was up against an ZX2 with an aluminum wing, my only run of the night. Here's my timeslip (begin cringing now).

R/T - 1.158
60' - 2.237
330 - 6.078
1/8 - 9.170
MPH - 79.83
1000 - 12.070
1/4 - 14.768
MPH - 85.73

Ouch. I bogged the launch, spun 2nd, spun 3rd, and then screwed up big time. Tried to shift too fast into 4th, ended up in neutral instead, bounced off the rev limiter, threw it into 4th, and went down the track.

I turned off and got my timeslip, nasty low-end valve tick, revs dropped way too fast, whole car shaked when accelerating in any gear, craptacular sound, pretty much fucked the whole thing up. I knew it was done then and parked it next to my friends as they walked over and tried to make me feel better.

I figure there's at least one part of every component fucked up (head, bottom, clutch, tranny), so there's some work for me to do. I was fairly pissed when it happened, but after a 3 hour ride back at 45mph, I'm kind of laughing. The way I figure it, anything I screwed up, I can replace with a nice aftermarket piece. There goes the money I was saving for a Canon EOS1D digital camera, but i'll make it back anyhow.

As for drag racing, did my first time suck hard? Yep. Will I be back? Yep. Will I shift into 4th a wee bit slower? Oh Yeah.

for a first time, you should give yourself props for a couple different things. First, you got out there and raced. That alone takes *****, so regardless of the outcome, just recognize that everybody has to start somewhere. Secondly, you raced at the track, not on the street, and that too is a really good thing. So yea...props! :-D

As for the car, go thru the basic tune-up steps. Adjust the valves, check the fluids, check the timing, all that good stuff.

no way dude...i hate hearing that!!!! i can't believe i just drove this car like 5 days ago and now its all messed up...

but on a side note, i would seriously check the car out. bouncing off the rev limiter shouldn't do the damage you say you have. i bounce off mine all the time auto-xing with no ill effects. maybe your timing is messed or something else....

good luck and if you need any help with it, let me know!

well just like breaka_1_9 said about bouncing off the rev limiter shoudn't do what you said the car is doing but i can't think of anything you did would cause that really. I am saying the car could have jumped time but you have just about a brand new motor. Its really perplexing to figure this one out.

what i'm wondering is if you broke a motor mount that would cause the car to shake i'm sure and plus it could cause the car to jump time. You would really ave to break one though and i don't know if you checked under the hood. i am just kinda throwing out idea's because me and keith cant' figure it out.

i can't belive i drove this car 5 days ago and this is what happened, it ran perfect.

man...sounds scary....kinda the feelings that make you wanna cry and wish it was all over. But like you said...the brighter side of things is that now you can slap some nice aftermarket pieces in that motor of yurs....but one thing...what motor do you have....because how the hell did you mess up the launch, bog, spin, miss yur shift...and ******* get a 14.7!!!!
thas like a perfect run for me...oh well....my car is slow.

i admit i always thought the ITR motor was useless and i still do but for a stock motor in that car, that car was fast. I didn't get on it too much though so i wouldn't know

I thought it might have been the motor mounts too, but today I had a friend walk alongside as it accelerated in 1st and he saw no movement while I felt like an earthquake inside. I don't know what the problems could be, It shakes like a mother around 2500-3000rpm and then smooths out it the 3k range.

I had a helmet on during the run, and when I first shifted, I kinda stood on the throttle for a long time(in the quarter mile anyway) until I got the brain power to realize what I was doing, when I shifted into 4th finally, there was no power whatsoever.

I am at my apartment in school, so I can't really diagnose anything until I get home this weeked, which mean another 2 1/2 drive is now going to be a 4 hour ride.

it could still be the motor mounts, you can feel it more than someone could see it. I would take a look around your engine bay for any cracks or anything. I am pretty positive thats what it is.

how long did you hold it at the rev limiter in neutral?

As I remember it, I came up to redline in 3rd (around 90?) shifted, bounced off limiter as it coasted down, got it into gear, and accerlerated from 80 to 85 before the line. So a fairly long time.

I say you might've bent some valves worst case scenario, or they just got out of specs really bad. My friend had the same thing happen when he missed shift racing on the freeway, took us like a week to figure out what happened. It ended up being 2 bent valves on cylinder 4. This is just a heads up on something to check. His engine at idle shook a little and when he revved it, it revved really slow until like 3500 then it kinda smoothened out. HTH

For mounts I used HCP on everything. The side tranny mount I had to custom weld so I could use the hydro tranny so that's the first one I'm going to look at.
