confirm diagnostic mode?
I jumper the plug connector by the glove box so I can adjust the ignition timing. I'm having some issues getting enough advance, so I want to make sure it's actually going into diagnostic mode. It isn't holding the CEL on like my OBD1 does. It doesn't do anything. I grounded the wires directly and still no indication. The CEL comes on breifly when starting the car so I know it's not the bulb.
This is a 90 Civic hatch Si, stock PM6 ECU, SOHC non VTEC ZC.

the problem is i think you are jumping the wrong connector there should be a connector on the right shock tower should have a yellow boot on it

Wrong, the jumper is inside the car on 90-91's and outside the car on 88-89's

It would'nt matter. Check your timing without the connector, then check it with the connector. It doesn't make a big difference, I've been doing this for a few years at my shop and have'nt got any complaints.
You've been doing this for years contrary to the factory service manual? That's why I don't let other people work on my car. When you advance the timing, the ECU will retard it back. So you have to jumper the connector and put it in diagnostic mode.
I never had a problem with this on OBD1. ECU is probably bad.

damn right suspendedHatch
I have had to repair every repair I did not do by myself(even when I had a "knowledgable" helper)
I could not find any difference with or without the jumper (once again it is on the -inside- on my 91dxrx)
I always follow the helms manual step by step(best investment ever).
every "shop" I took my car to had the same thing for there service guide, they just didnt follow it apparently. (being "ASE" they figured they knew better I guess)
If you dont have it, send me your address and I will send you a cd of the full manual with all appendicies.
