Are d-series engines non-interference?
Depends on what you're talking about. Mount wise, they will all bolt in no problem. (with the exception of differnt gen's t-belt mount. hybrid of both car's required.)
Wiring differneces are the only real diff I guess. Any time you change OBD you're gonna have electrical diff's.

I believe D series are not the non-interference design. Your timing belt goes, now most of your valves are bent too.
ford escorts 91-96 are non-interference design. I was so relieved to know that when my belt snapped...

well....
yes, if your belt snaps...your valves are probably bent.
That means the engine is an "interference" design.
To answer your question, yes the are interference engines.

Hmmm...I see. I was hoping they weren't since I find so many deals on EF's with snapped belts. Then again, it's a perfect excuse for a swap right
? Thanks for the info. That's why I love 4ag's and BMW M42's<---non-interference! BTW I'm on the lookout for an SI. Someone beat me to a lien sale one today. It was at a tow yard and all it needed was a hood! Clean title for $600!!!! Oh well, I'm sure I'll find another deal...

The belt snapped on my D16A9, I was at about 4k at 70 mph.
No damage to the valves what so ever.
Also know of a few other D16 EF's that have had belt snaps and no problems.

It happens but the engine is an interference engine still so if you snap a timing belt you should always check if the valves are bent. At the very least do a compression test after putting the new belt on.

Interference engines are generally superior to non-interference engines. The engines are built to tighter specs and are optimized for max performance.
