Default Autometer Tach Installation, wrong RPM.

I am by far not a n00b to wiring and have done a few before but I ran across one today that has me stumped.

I cut the orange and black wires because its on a 4cyl application, hooked the positive to the battery, the negative to a good ground, and the tach signal to the blue wire off the distributor ( same setup I have done PLENTY of times before )

Started up the car, its at an idle of about 1500 at the moment, but the 5" is reading close to 6k. Rev it up, still same thing? Think I was sold a bad autometer tach?

When I did my shift light I tapped into the gauge cluster, using the blue wire with white dots on it. I would try that.

Technically, that isnt the most accurate reading. Autometer themselves told me that I need to go off the distributor as well as many other threads on this board state. I am just wanting to know if I was sold a bad tach because it reads super high.

some of the tachs you have to cut one of the small wires.I got a autometer tach off of a crx and tried it on a eg civic and the readings were high or something like that.turns out the eg needed the wires to be reconnected. just go to the tech section of autometer, that's how I found out.

I tried connecting one, and then the other, and both... Last night when I was being stumped. Like I said, this is not my first time.

I think the actual tach is fubar.

you have to cut the small wires on the back of the tach and mix and match until you get the right RPM
