Default main bearing bore codes?

I am deciphering the main bearing bore codes that are on the flywheel side of my d16a6. It says (going from top--head side, to bottom--oil pan side) B B C B C. Now, which one is #1 and which one is #5? Do I read it going down--in other words #1=B? Or do I read it going up--in other words #1=C? I hope I am being clear enough, because I have a copy of a service manual for a d16z6 and it says you read from bottom to top--in other words #1=C BUT I also have a Haynes 88-91 Civic repair manual and it says the opposite that #1 would be B!!!! I am confused...Which one is correct? This is for a d16a6.....

You might want to follow the instructions for the block you're building.

z6 and a6 should have the codes in the same order--the letters are stamped in the exact same place on each block.....

You start with the beginning of the sequence being on journal number one. It isn't rocket science.

I know its not rocket science there guy. Its a simple question, and frankly they don't make it very clear. In my situation the "letters" are very close to each other-(all b and c)-but what about someone doing a build who has a block that says A D A B C? It would be pretty easy to get it backwards. Journal 1 = the first letter going towards the head side from the crank side, or the other way around?

Journal number one is the one closest to the oil pump/crank pulley side of the motor. The letter sequence reads left to right and begins on journal number one.

I know journal one is closest to the crank pulley--I was just confused about the way they engraved the markings on the block. thanks though.

Bringing it back because I need to know where to find these letters. Do you have to remove the transmission?
