Default May sound stupied but who cares!?

i dont know if this is the best place to put this but...I got a ticket for a "altered" exaust! I live in utah and i was in salt lake city and i got pulled over! The cop said anything altered that wasnt from the factory is illegal in SLC. he said even the stock muffler with a chrome tip is out of the question. I have a full cat back exaust(Thermal). I tried to fight it and said in the county iam in you can change it. He said well even if my car is registered somewhere else it dosnt matter. Is there any info i can get on how to fight this further. I wouldnt mind paying it but the ticket is 100 bucks.

Contact a lawyer or visit a local library to look up state law on these issues.

From the Salt Lake City Laws & City Ordaninces

12.28.100 Mufflers And Exhaust Systems:
Every motor vehicle shall at all times be equipped with a muffler in good working order and in constant operation. Notwithstanding the foregoing, no person shall modify the exhaust system of a motor vehicle in a manner which will amplify or increase or change the character of the noise emitted by the motor of such vehicle above that emitted by the muffler originally installed on the vehicle. No person shall sell, furnish, provide or purchase, nor shall any person attach to any vehicle any device which will or is intended to increase or change the character of the sound of the original muffling equipment on any motor vehicle. No person shall operate a motor vehicle with an exhaust system so modified. (Ord. 31-00 § 19, 2000: prior code Title 46, Art. 9 § 172)

So if it's louder than stock, it's illegal. Busted.

that sucks big time. But since there is no dB limit, how do they know how loud stock is? I'm thinking maybe they gotta have documentation of the dB level of your stock car, and then the exhaust you put on. Maybe that won't work. I don't know.

the law read almost exactly the same here in washington, until the people on the scene lobbied to have it change, now there is a set decibel limit.

BUt....if u read it carefully...it never says that u cant replace the muffler...it says u cant modify it...and u cant buy/sell a device that will modify the muffler to increase sound...
