Im thinking about buying a 92 civic si...for a pretty good deal..but the guy says it needs a new "steering rack"..i have no idea what this is or even how much to get it replaced and fixed,he said it should cost like 230 to get the part and fix...can u shed some light on this for me? thanks

 

steering rack is basically what allows your car to turn. you turn the steering wheel which turns a gear which moves the rack (and thus the tires) back & forth.

as for fixing it, never had to do it.

Dave421 pretty much explained the basics of it, but replacing one isnt fun, it isnt hard or confusing, just time consuming, unless you get lucky an line up the splines on the first try, which is unlikely.

 

so i would be able to do this without ne special tools? thanks guys
