Black smoke!!

Default Black smoke Question!!

Everytime I go past 85mph or 90mph or 6000rpm in vtec my car shoots out small clouds of black smoke, what would cause that? I have 96 ek with a GSR swap, straight pipe out a Spoon NI exhaust

Its not burning oil cause i have kept a eye on the oil but its fine. How can I fix the car from running rich?

on a basically stock (bolt-ons dont count) just try a basic maintanence to get her healthy. check spark plugs, injectors, i dunno...all those things

Everything is pretty much new, I do have a CEL for the IACV , that is probably it but just though I might ask and check

Everything's fine. You said you're running straight pipe. The gas isn't burning up in the catalytic converter like it should, that's all. Unless you're getting shitty gas mileage or a ticket I wouldn't worry about it.

Oh, and about the IACV, doubt it's that. I've never seen a bad IACV produce black smoke. It could produce white smoke because it's coolant controlled and if you have a leak and there and it lands on the exhaust pipe you will be looking at white smoke in your rear view mirror. If you're throwing a black cloud out, I doubt it's because of the IACV.

Gas mileage is still good and I aint getting pulled over ( knock on wood ) ..

Wouldn't sweat it, sounds like it's just from hard driving w/ a straight pipe. If it concerns you so much go to an exhaust shop and put a cat on it. Should go away.

i have the same thing that happens when im in high rpms but i AM runing a cat.
Compression is 200 across, miles on the motor is around 120k. I do go through about a quart inbetween oil changes to keep things topped off and the oil is changed no longer then 3k. Oil is mobile 1 synthetic 10-30.
