Default LS tranny grinds in 2nd

A guy is selling me his 94 ls tranny for 225. he states it grinds in 2nd only. what can the problem be and how much to get the thing fixed? does it matter for emissions or other elements if it's mated to a 98 ls motor?

dude, that would be the syncros and it will cost you at least 225 to rebuild it yourself. buy a different one. trust me i have built tranny's before.

First off its called Synchros....

Second, you can rebuild the tranny by buying synchros from H-Dealer if you want to stick with OEM. Or you can search around for cheaper rebuild kits.

3rd option is to put GM SYNCHROMESH to hide the problem. It'll shift a little better if you put GM SYNCHROMESH as tranny fluid.

GM synchromesh is the **** it took care of my 5 gear grind and also it could be grinding cause the clutch could be bad thats what was wrong with one of my transmissions but it is an older trans

*sigh

aside from being nothing civic related
1. rebuilding transmissions aren't hard. If my adhd *** can do it, anyone can. Honda spends a lot of money on fully documenting with step by step instructions on everything you'd ever dream about.
2. Dog teeth grinding means that the gear and the synchro collar are probably worn out. it's about a 200 dollar replacement.
3. if you buy the trans at 225, spend about that much on parts to repair it. the parts will be NEW and you won't be taking any chances with other shady sellers.

IMO do it, you can learn a lot. if you have any questions, post them here and there's a bunch of people who can help you out. A few crappy digital camera photos and a free photobucket account can will allow you to share the trickier, intimidating parts with hundreds of us on here.

That GM Syncromesh is just a band-aid. The problem will still be there, if you want it removed, replace the synchro (sp?).

well, i find it rather expensive to rebuild a tranny. all together plus the tranny. it'll be over 700 bux. I can pick up one those stage 1 tranny from one of the posts on here somewhere. So a guy local I just found out is selling an LS tranny for 350 and guarantees no grinds. So imma go with that.
