If car was stolen Q: Insurance and $
How do I get my money back for my car mods? Do I need reciepts AND pictures or are pictures just fine? I have some of the reciepts but for some of the stuff, I don't have them for. I have pics of EVERY mod I made though.
If one is to expect an insurance company to pay for aftermarket parts...is it also true that you need to report these parts to the insurance company when you sign your policy, and/or amend your policy accordingly, such that your premium is adjusted to cover the additional value of the vehicle?
The reason I ask is...I paid $58,500 for my car...but have put another $25,000 easy into it...the car on the market is valued at $42,500 in OEM form...so if the car is stolen...would I receive just the $42,500, or also the $25,000 (or some depreciated value on the $25,000) for the mods?

If you haven't specifically added the items that you want covered onto your policy, chances are(~95%+) that you will not receive any sort of compensation for the additional items.
Example - you spend $1000 on a new seat, whereas that stock seat is more expensive from the dealership, according to the insurance company you have just downgraded your car...they will not give you additional $$$ for products that are less expensive then the stock parts.

some insurance companies just want the documentation. That is good enough. At least for AAA. if it's bolted to the car, there is no need for "extra" insurance. if it's removable, then extra insurance maybe. Insure your Aftermarket headunits f00s!

Most policies offer an X ammount of coverage toward BOLT ON aftermarket stuff.
BOLT ON meaning anything that is physically ATTACHED to the vehicle, up to about $3000 depending on the company and or policy. Extra protection is also offered, but for a higher premium
My GSR got stolen, had 96 SE leather seats, Type R front/rear bars, new tires, 98+ rear end, type r tail lights, aem cai, I got $8000 (94 with ~120K).
What's fair is fair.

Don't let them shaft you! Let them know that you have an attorney handling your papers, it'll shake them up a little. For your benefit, go to www.autotrader.com & www.thepartstrader.com and print out as many ITR ads stock and modified and give it to your insurance company. I believe that will be one of your strongest tools. It helped me a lot! My Ins Co wanted to pay $20,000 and then I sent them the ads and they called me back in 15 minutes and said that they would pay me $24,500.
Good Luck and if you need help or have any questions about the ins papers IM me.

I know you have AAA but if you have Progressive you can go straight to the website and add anything to your car, you just list what you purchased and the value and your done.
hehe...
This is why JDM OEM parts are so great. TECHNICALLY the insurance company has to cover the cost of them becasue they are OEM parts. Doesnt matter from where... Just that they are OEM.
ANything "bolted" on to the car should be covered up to any amount really. Id take pictures and keep them on file with the reciepts just to be sure of it. But any and all bolt ons should be covered. The only way to be sure is to READ YOUR POLICY!!!!!! Since each one is different.
